Pitching Washers: Is it Fun Enough?

In olden times, pitching washers was an exciting game for backcountry folks, who would dig three holes in the ground and throw washers with the objective to make them fall in those holes. No doubt, the game was fun enough but the targets could not be taken anywhere as one might wish. However, things have undergone a sea-change and the same holds true for washer toss games. Today, you can buy all the equipment required to play the game and use it anywhere. Unlike traditional washer pitching, you don't need to be wary of the holes being damaged or adjust your position to that of the holes. You can simply pick up a washer board and place it wherever you would love to.

The washer boards and washers are built to a lot of specifications but variations can always be found at different times and places. The washer boards are placed 15 feet apart from each other and players score based on how far they succeed in pitching washers into the holes cast in the washer boards. The washer toss games are usually played by 2 or 4 players and require good throwing skills to make for a competitive side. The scores are given on the basis of the hole through which the washer drops in a particular throw. If the washer goes through the closest hole, it scores one point, the second hole brings up a score of 3 points and the last hole gives a score of 5 points. Each of the players throw 3 washers per round. At the end of each round, lower scores are subtracted from the higher score to come up with actual figures for both of the teams.

The teams go on to play the game till they reach a point where one of the teams has scored 21 points which is considered the winning score. In some of the variations, they need to exceed 21 points to win the game. It is an exciting version of the old-time washer toss games which can be played on almost any surface. It can be an excellent source of fun and entertainment and complement the festive mood of any event wonderfully. If you are passionate enough for the game, you can make it for yourself as well.

The bean bags weigh no more than few ounces - after all they are merely small cotton bags filled with poly-beads. The players or teams now initiate tossing the bean bags till both groups are through with their stock of 4 bean bags each. It is now the turn of calculating the score.

A bag that falls through the hole is worth 3 points while a bag that touches the board but does not reach the hole will be scored 2 points. The bag that does not touch the board at all earns no points. After each round is over, the lower score of one team is deducted from the higher score of the other team to yield the final score. The game continues till a score of 21 is reached and the team that does so first is the winner.
